Empowering Pacific Youth: Reflecting on Young, Free & Pacific’s Impact and Future Journey

 In Community, Events, Leadership, Pasifika

In 2023, the vibrant spirit of Pacific culture illuminated the halls as 455 high school students from Auckland and Wellington gathered for the transformative Young, Free & Pacific event. Over four exhilarating days, these young leaders immersed themselves in a diverse array of activities, fostering a profound sense of belonging and igniting aspirations for the future.

A Comprehensive Look at Our Annual Gathering

At the heart of each day lay a rich array of activities aimed at nurturing leadership and cultural identity. From dynamic dance workshops to soul-stirring spoken word performances, students were invited to explore their talents and embrace the essence of being young and Pacific.

Understanding Our Community

The event boasted a diverse representation of Pacific ethnicities, including Tongan, Samoan, Cook Islander, Fijian, and more, reflecting the rich cultural mosaic of New Zealand’s Pacific communities. Year levels ranged from 11 to 13, with a significant presence from Year 12 students. Notably, popular ethnicities included Tongan and Samoan, mirroring the demographic makeup of many participating schools.

Voices from the Community

Resonating with gratitude, students, parents, and teachers alike echoed the profound impact of the event. Students shared tales of newfound confidence and camaraderie, while parents expressed awe at witnessing their children’s transformation. One parent recounted how their once-shy son credited the event for emboldening him to ace his first job interview.

Reflections and Forward Steps

As the 2024 milestone approaches, marking a decade of Young, Free & Pacific events, we embrace the journey of continuous growth and collaboration. Learning from past successes and challenges, we remain steadfast in our commitment to empowering Pacific youth. Strengthening partnerships with schools will be pivotal as we endeavour to sustainably uplift and support our future leaders.
