The Community Café: Social Enterprise

Promoting the possibilities of Pasifika innovation and sustainability through our two community cafés – one in Mangere Arts Centre and one in Mt Roskill.

COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT

The Affirming Works’ scope has expanded to now include registered charity, “The Community Café”. Founders, Emeline and Alipate Mafile’o see the café as a place to bring together businesses, community and government groups – as well as families and individuals – for social good, rather than just profit.

SOCIAL, AND ENTERPRISING!

The Community Café sells Tupu’anga coffee, another social enterprise managed by Emeline and Alipate Mafile’o under the company Fofola Ltd. The coffee business is an additional way of fulfilling wider social initiatives and provides a funding stream for AW’s youth mentoring programmes which are run throughout South Auckland schools.

TRAINING OPPORTUNITIES

The Community Café also provides training opportunities for young people to train as baristas, ultimately working towards the goal of being able to manage the café themselves. In this way young people are assured of secure employment once they have left school, and can use their café experience as a stepping stone to further opportunities.
